Pippa Tales ~ Episode- Home is where the heart is
Tales from the Lagoon~ Pippa Tales~ Episode- Home is Where the Heart Is
Hi Everyone it’s Me Pippa! Well actually while I was in rehab I found out I’m probably a boy, so you can call me Pip, short for Pippin.
If you are just tuning in, I’m a brown pelican who after 7 weeks of recovering from a pokey fish stuck in my gullet I started feeling sick. My Hooman friends helped me go to a bird rehab place in St Augustine, 90 miles from where I was living in New Smyrna Beach.
That was when I took my first car ride! Wow was that fun, and way easier than flying. While in rehab I bellied up to the all you can eat sushi bar every day! Yup, everyday. They said I was a good eater. After a few days they let me out of my private enclosure into what they called ‘the yard.’
The yard was full of other birds, some like me, some made loud quacking noises and looked funny. In the yard I could fly around and still eat lots of sardines. I love sardines! They make me happy. After a few days in the yard I realized I could fly over the fence where other pelicans were hanging out wild and free.
The best part is I could fly back into the yard and go to a door where the really nice lady brought more fish. I could be free and go back to belly up to the sushi bar. It was really great.
But, something was missing. I missed my dolphin and pelican friends from New Smyrna Beach. And of course I missed my hooman friends who saved me form the pokey fish. So…..I decided I would eat as I could and start heading south. I’m not very good with time but I think I took off Tuesday morning just as the sun was coming up and kept flying until I landed back in the lagoon with my friends on Wednesday around 10AM.
When Shelley, my hooman friend saw me on my pole where I was waiting for her, she yelled Pippin!!!!!! I jumped off my pole and went right to her. I flapped my wings in her face a lot. She didn’t even yell at me about personal space. We did a little dance in the water, then I slept on my pole for 6 hours. I was really, really tired from my flight.
I’m not sure how, but my left foot hurts so I have a little resting and healing to do….again. I hope to be around to share how that goes.
What I learned in the past week is that even though I love the sushi bar, my home is where my heart is, which is in New Smyrna Beach.
Stay tuned for more tales!
