Tales from the Lagoon ~ Episode - Pip the Pelican Introduces His Friends

Hi everyone it’s me Pip the Pelican! If you are just tuning in, I have had quite the adventure over the past 3 months. I’ll try to recap previous episodes.

On March 23rd, I ate a pokey fish, not to be confused with a tasty pokey bowl.

It was a filleted sheepshead fish, a spiney fish that got caught in my pouch. I sat on the beach for a few days until nice Hoomans took it out for me. I couldn’t fly for about 8 days, since the hospital was closed they told the Hoomans to feed me until I was better. Phew, I feel lucky!

I did pretty for about 6 weeks, then I got pretty sick. My Hooman friend Shelley took me to a bird place in St Augustine that fed me fish until I felt better. When they let me out after a week, I flew right back to my home in New Smyrna Beach, 75 miles.

Well, the jet lag was bad and I hurt my leg so I sat on my pole for 7 days while my Hooman friend helped me get better. They named a pole after me because I sat on it 6 weeks while healing after the pokey fish.

Now, I feel mostly good, I don’t sit on my pole anymore. I usually visit my Hooman once a day, and float around the lagoon or sit on the beach.

My other friends are there too, Mikey the great egret and Spot a snowy egret. I named Spot for the 3 spots he has on his cool looking toes. Spot, Shelley and I have sat together for many hours. I like him, he’s a cool kid.

Mikey got his name from my fisher Homan friend Donny. Mikey is really tall! He has long legs and looks like an angel when he is flying. He is called a great egret, probably because he is a really good fisher bird! He hangs out with me when I rest on the beach. He scares me a little but he isn’t as intense as the other pelicans. The mature pelicans can be very aggressive, so much so I shake when they are around.

On good days I like to play the stick game. I use my beak to pull the mangroves with all my might until I get a stick to come loose then I toss it around for a while.

Some days I take my stick to Shelley and she tosses it and I chase it. I like that game too. She said that’s why she calls me Puppy.

I still have rest days where I need to sit on the beach. I’m loosing a few feathers, I think that makes me tired. I’m lucky because Shelley, Spot and Mikey sit with me. They are my little family who help me feel safe and loved. I guess the pokey fish was a good thing.

Stay tuned for more tales!
